Sandra Grabman News

By Cheryl Morris

There’s always something going on with Sandra Grabman – and you’ll find all the latest right here.

– Memphis Film Festival:

From May 31 to June 2, 2012 – Thursday to Saturday – Sandy will attend the annual Memphis Film Festival, to be held at the Whispering Woods Hotel and Convention Center, located at 11200 East Goodman Road in Olive Branch, Mississippi.

This year, the Festival will salute TV Westerns of the past, among them Daniel Boone, on which Albert Salmi appeared in the role of Yadkin, Boone’s companion, during the show’s first season.

The Festival will begin at 9 a.m. each day. Events include showings of classic Western TV shows and movies, silent and live auctions, a TV Western trivia contest, and a live radio show recreation featuring celebrity guests. Saturday night, a Celebrity Awards Banquet will be held, hosted by John Buttram, the nephew of actor Pat Buttram. Admission to the banquet is $42.

Pre-registration for all three days is $65 per individual. The deadline for purchasing tickets at this rate is May 12, 2012.

Sandy will have a booth at the Festival and is looking forward to meeting her readers and signing copies of all five of her books: Spotlights & Shadows: The Albert Salmi Story, Plain Beautiful: The Life of Peggy Ann Garner, Pat Buttram, the Rocking Chair Humorist, No Retakes!, and Lloyd Nolan: An Actor’s Life With Meaning.

She will also bring along a stack of niece Cheryl Jordan's book entitled Our Gal Cal, a series of four novels in one volume. Beginning when Cal is transported in 1964 from a Dallas high school to a Hollywood sound stage, it takes us on a much larger journey that spans thirty years and includes adventure, tragedy, pathos, humor, and education. We learn with Cal about the finer points of acting as her mentor leads the way.

– Chisholm Trail Book Festival:

On Saturday, Sept. 17, 2011, Sandy attended the third annual Chisholm Trail Book Festival, held at the Simmons Center, located at 800 Chisholm Trail Parkway in Duncan, Oklahoma. The event ran from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission was free.

Sandy really enjoyed the opportunity to meet her readers and sign copies of all five of her books: Spotlights & Shadows: The Albert Salmi Story, Plain Beautiful: The Life of Peggy Ann Garner, Pat Buttram, the Rocking Chair Humorist, No Retakes!, and Lloyd Nolan: An Actor’s Life With Meaning.

Said Sandy, “The book festival. . . was really nice. It had been well publicized, so authors and readers from all over Oklahoma and Texas were there. Young folks, members of the FFA, were on hand to help us authors carry our boxes of books and table decorations. In addition to the author tables to browse were what they called ‘Mini book clubs’ in which an author would give a talk about his book or the subject in general. The sponsors of the event had a very appropriate prize for the authors who had the best table decoration – reams of paper. Every author can use that!”

– Local Authors Day at the Duncan Public Library:

On Saturday, April 9, 2011, Sandra attended a Local Authors Day at the Duncan Public Library in Duncan, Oklahoma.

She and the six other Oklahoma authors present enjoyed very much talking with visitors and selling and signing copies of their books.

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn Scheduled:

On Saturday, March 12, 2011, the historic Hershey Theater, located in Hershey, PA, presented the 1945 film A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, starring Peggy Ann Garner, as part of their annual Classic Film series.

The program began at 7 p.m. with a musical interlude on the theater’s historic Aeolian-Skinner organ. The movie followed at 7:30 p.m.

Sandra enjoyed seeing the classic film on the big screen – as well as signing books in the theater’s grand lobby both before and after the movie, meeting fans of Peggy Ann Garner and Lloyd Nolan, and touring Hershey with her family over the weekend.

– Lloyd Nolan Biography:

Sandy’s latest classic film actor biography was published in December 2010 through BearManor Media.

Lloyd Nolan, An Actor’s Life With Meaning tells the story of Nolan’s public life on film and television, as well as his private life as an advocate for physically challenged people, inspired by his autistic son Jay.

– Gene Autry Festival, September 2009:

In late September, Sandra attended the annual Gene Autry Film & Music Festival, held at the Gene Autry Oklahoma Museum in the tiny town of Gene Autry, OK. Housed in what was once the town’s schoolhouse, the museum is dedicated to singing cowboys, and besides Gene Autry, features displays on Roy Rogers, Eddie Dean, Ken Maynard, and others. The school’s 500-seat auditorium is now the venue for the annual festival.

This year, the festival was held Sept. 23 through Sept. 27, 2009.

On Saturday, Sept. 26, Sandra participated in the panel discussion “Sidekicks . . . You Gotta Love ‘em”, along with Bobby Copeland (author of the book Gabby Hayes: King of the Cowboy Comics, 2008); author and B-Western historian Mike Nevins; and John Buttram, nephew of actor Pat Buttram.

Sandra also attended the “Celebrity Spotlight”, immediately following the panel. At her vendor’s table, she sold and signed copies of all her books and enjoyed meeting many of the attendees.

Attending previous years’ festivals gave Sandra the chance to interview many of Pat Buttram’s co-stars, friends, and stuntmen for her book Pat Buttram, The Rocking Chair Humorist.
